Why Cross Country Skiing?

Cross-country skiing is great fun and offers great affordability. It is a low impact, low risk outdoor winter sport and is truly a “sport for life”.

At a basic level, it is a sport that is easily learned, with “no boundaries” for age, gender or fitness level. At the highest level of competition, its mastery demands exceptional skills and fitness.

Grade 7 students come out 3 times while grade 2 students will come out 4-6 times during the ski season. We are also exploring the possibility of adding additional grades.

Club instructors teach the students basic cross-country skiing technique through a variety of games and activities. All skiing equipment is provided and lessons are provided to all of Golden and Nicholson’s students.

Special Olympics

Weekly sessions led by volunteers and coaches teach the fundamentals of classic style skiing to children and adults with developmental disabilities. One of our athletes, Shelly Poland won a gold and bronze medal at the Special Olympics World Championships in 2013.

Registration Instructions

Registration and payment of fees is managed through Zone 4 (www.zone4.ca).

Huckleberry Loppet

The Huckleberry Loppet will be held in February. All children registered in GNSC youth programs can participate at no extra charge. Please do not register for the loppet on Zone 4 or you will have to pay the registration fee. Coaches will be asking their skiers whether they would like to participate in the loppet.

Parent/Guardian Involvement

Aside from the Head Coach, our ski program is entirely dependent on volunteers. Volunteers are needed for coaching, tail guiding, lodge sitter, preparing snacks and hot chocolate, and many other duties. Please plan to volunteer at least twice during the season. Check with your child’s coach for sign-up. Also, we are always in need of coaches - please contact one of the coaches if you are interested in becoming a coach.

Notes

* Rental packages cover the provision of skis, boots and poles for the season for the coaching sessions your child is signed up for. Rental equipment must not be removed from the Dawn Mountain site as it is required to support delivery of other GNSC programs (e.g. local school programs, weeklong camps). GNSC is unable to guarantee the availability of rental equipment for all participants.

** Levels – GNSC will do its best to put your child in the suitable level group based on age, ability and coach availability. The categorisation of kids in suitable levels is at the discretion of the program coordinator and coaches.

*** In addition to the program fee registrants are required to pay the $19.00 Cross-Country BC membership fee which provides liability coverage for the participant and GNSC.
