Special Olympics BC Golden offers various sporting opportunities to persons with intellectual disabilities. Our age group of athletes currently range from age 5 to 40 locally. We offer swimming, bowling, golfing, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, snowshoeing and dryland training in Golden. We are a non-profit agency that relies on donations, local fundraising and many volunteers to coach these athletes and much community support.
We have 3 Golden athletes, Sebastian Gylander, Shelly Poland and John Templeton that qualified in our regional snow events last year and they will be competing in the BC Provincial Winter Games in Vernon on February 23, 2019. If they qualify at this event, they could move on to the Canadian Nationals in Thunderbay, Ontario in 2020.
Locally in Golden, we are hosting our first ever Golden Snow Camp on Jan 19 & 20, 2019 in preparation to enchance the coaches and athletes skill set to enable them to perform at a higher level at the Special Olympics BC Winter Provincial Games to be held in Vernon on February 23 & 24, 2019 in Vernon, BC.
We have over 50 athletes and coaches participating in this Snow Camp. They are coming from Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Nelson, Trail, Castlegar and Grand Forks. This will not only develop our coaches/athletes skill set it also provides the opportunity for team building within our Kootenay team.
